Let's see how long your investment portfolio will last you
What's your portfolio value at retirement?
Would you like to leave an inheritance?
Nothing is uploaded anywhere — everything stays right here in your browser.
Enter your expected portfolio value at retirement, choose a drawdown (income) rate, and this tool will show you roughly how much monthly income that could provide and how many years the portfolio should last — allowing for investment growth and inflation. You can also set aside a percentage to leave behind as an inheritance.
Your Portfolio & Inheritance▸

We assume your portfolio stays invested in Southern Charter's Defensive Fund of Funds during retirement — the fund used for clients within 5 years of, or already in, retirement. Its stated benchmark objective is CPI + 3% a year, so that's what this calculator uses for investment growth by default: your income still draws down the portfolio, but the fund's own growth is working against that drawdown at the same time — which is why, at lower withdrawal rates, the balance can hold steady or even keep growing.
These are illustrative assumptions, not a promise of future performance. See the Defensive Fund's fact sheet →
Compare the Drawdown Rates
All figures below are in Today's Rand — the withdrawal amount itself rises with inflation each year to protect its buying power, so this is what it's worth to you right now, not the growing Rand number you'd actually see on a statement in later years.
Portfolio Balance Over Time
Each line shows how your available drawdown pool is projected to shrink (or grow) over time at that withdrawal rate.
